Like many other places, relatively few citizens choose to run for public office in Kendall County. While, unsurprisingly, well-salaried elected positions often have multiple people line up to run, those positions with nominal stipends (e.g. city council) or which are entirely unpaid (e.g. school board) often go uncontested, sometimes even when the candidate has never previously held office. My opinion is that this runs counter to the democratic principles that underpin our form of government and can make it difficult for our local institutions to be representative of our community.
I believe some of the reasons that so few people run for local public office are:
This particular part of the website is my effort to try and help more people who want to run for office… actually do it. I’m starting out by listing upcoming elections and providing the information someone would need to file for that office. Eventually, I’d like to add a “Campaigning 101” section that would help demystify what it takes to run a campaign. I’m awkward, aggressive, and generally anti-social, yet I managed to get elected multiple times. If I can do it, anybody can.
